Requirements for a Minor in Theatre

The Minor in Theatre consists of a minimum of 24 credits taken from the following three categories. No more than two courses included in one's major may be counted toward the minor.

A student must work on at least two, but no more than three, productions, acquiring at least eight credits in Production and Performance Courses (either onstage or backstage):

English 290/291: Plays in Production—4 credits
English 292/293/294/295: Plays in Performance: Name of Play—4 credits
English 296/297: Stage Management: Fall/Spring—4 credits

Theatre Method and Performance Courses; eight credits in all (Spring course numbers in parentheses):

English 123: Playwriting—2 credits
English 170 (171): Technical Theatre—4 credits
English 172: Intro to Stage Lighting and Sound—4 credits
English 174 (175): Acting Techniques—4 credits
English 176 (also, sometimes,177): Voice & Movement for the Actor—4 credits

English 177: Mask, Character and Voice: The Actor Prepares—4 credits
English 178 (179): Design for the Stage*—2 credits

English 180: Directing—4 credits
English 252: Theatre in England—4 credits
English 270 (271): Advanced Technical Theatre—4 credits

English 273: Movement Masterclass for the Actor—4 credits

English 278: Advanced Playwriting—4 credits
English 360 Special Projects: Theatre—4 credits
Other classes offered occasionally may also fulfill this requirement

Dramatic Literature; eight credits (at least two courses):

English 111: Introduction to Shakespeare, or
English 203: Medieval Drama
English 208: Renaissance Drama, Elizabethan and Jacobean Drama
English 209: Problems in Shakespeare, or
English 210: Shakespeare
English 214: Restoration and Eighteenth Century Drama
English 228: African American Drama
English 235: Modern Drama
English 243: Major Author—a playwright

Additionally, students taking an Internship in Theatre (ENG 394), undertaking an Independent Study (ENG 391) whose subject is Theatre or Dramatic Research, or enrolled in a standard Research Course (ENG 380) or Honors Thesis (ENG 398) with a Dramatic Literature/Theatrical focus might also have those classes count towards a Minor in Theatre. Similarly, Study Abroad options in London and Bath (if allied to dramatic or theatrical work) might count towards a Minor. Other courses relating to drama and/or theatre, in the English Department may, from time to time, be valid additions to this list, too. See the Director of Undergraduate Studies for details.

In cases where some courses are unavailable, students should consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies for possible substitutions.
