Supporters Give for Medical Student Scholarships
The School of Medicine and Dentistry's
Endowed Scholarship Initiative surpassed
its goal of adding $10 million to
the endowment. David S. Guzick, dean
of the School of Medicine and Dentistry,
announced the campaign in 2004 as
part of an effort to reduce the growing
debt burden faced by medical students.
More than 90 percent of the School of
Medicine students borrow to attend.
The average debt at graduation is more
than $130,000. A $10 million increase
could generate more than $500,000 each
year in new scholarship aid. Due to the
wonderful success of this scholarship
initiative, it has been extended for
another three years.
