Faculty Awards

In the past year, many faculty members were honored for outstanding work in their field. Several are noted below; for a complete list, visit www.rochester.edu/president/memos/2006/awards_announcement.html.

Richard Aslin, William R. Kenan Professor and professor of brain and cognitive sciences, and Lynne Maquat, Dean's Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics, were named fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Maquat also was elected president of the RNA Society.

Richard Eisenberg, Tracy H. Harris Professor of Chemistry; Fred Sherman, Marie Curran Wilson and Joseph C. Wilson Professor of Biochemistry; and David Williams, William G. Allyn Professor of Medical Optics and professor of brain and cognitive sciences, were named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In addition, Sherman received the 2006 George W. Beadle Medal from the Genetics Society of America, and Williams received the Friedenwald Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.

Ying Quartet

FAMILY HONORS: The Ying Quartet, made up of siblings David '92E (DMA), Janet '92E, Phillip '91E, '92E (MM), and Timothy '91E (DMA), won a 2005 Grammy Award in the Best Classical Crossover Album category. The Eastman School of Music's string quartet-in-residence received the Grammy for 4 + Four, an album recorded with the Turtle Island String Quartet. More than a dozen other Eastman School faculty, students, and alumni were nominated for awards in 2005.

Harriet Kitzman, professor of nursing, was named a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Stanley Engerman, John H. Munro Professor of Economics and professor of history, received the Award of Distinguished Fellow from the American Economic Association. In addition, Engerman was elected a fellow of the W. E. B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University.

Eric Blackman, professor of physics and astronomy; Kevin McFarland, professor of physics; and Lynne Orr, professor of physics, were named fellows of the American Physical Society.

James C. M. Li, Albert A. Hopeman Professor of Engineering, and Ching Tang, adjunct professor of chemical engineering, were named fellows of the National Academy of Engineering.

Stephen Jacobs, professor of optical and chemical engineering, was named a fellow of the Optical Society of America

David Mathews, assistant professor of biochemistry and biophysics, was named a fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Elias Mandala, professor of history, and Patricia Herminghouse, Karl F. and Bertha A. Fuchs Professor Emerita of German Studies, were named Fulbright Scholars by the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.

John Tarduno, chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and professor of geophysics, received the 2006 Guggenheim Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.
