Fundamental Science

A deeper understanding of the basic perceptual science of visual, auditory, touch, balance, and spatial orientation senses is fundamental to creating seamless and convincing immersive virtual reality and augmented reality (VR/AR) experiences.

Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, and Vision

Researchers at the River Campus and the Medical Center are working to understand how our brains and bodies process sensory perceptions. Advances in our understanding of sensory neursoscience happen every day at the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience and the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences.

The University’s Center for Visual Science (CVS), meanwhile, is a hub for interdisciplinary research that drives new educational and medical therapies. The center brings together scientists from more than 30 research laboratories from across campus, including:

  • Brain and cognitive sciences
  • Neuroscience
  • Neurology
  • Flaum Eye Institute
  • Institute of Optics

Our scientists have access to two virtual reality labs: one in Meliora Hall and one at the Medical Center. In short, Rochester is the ideal place to study the science of virtual and augmented reality while exploring the clinical applications of VR/AR.
