At Rochester:

  • Arrived at the University just before the outbreak of World War II after starring in tennis at New Trier (IL) High School and playing for the Midwest Junior Davis Cup Team
  • As a freshman, he played in the national intercollegiate tournament at Princeton University, reaching the round of 16
  • Played basketball for three seasons, also competed in track and field, and baseball
  • Played one football game in 1942 before injury cut his career short
  • Accepted into the University's Honors Program

Post-Graduate:

  • Accepted a graduate scholarship from Harvard University in 1946
  • Left Harvard in 1947 and returned to the University as an instructor
  • Worked as an assistant coach with the football program under Elmer Burnham
