Minors

Our department offers two minors:

We require students to maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) in the minor, excluding allied field courses.

Biological Sciences (BI) Minor

To begin the minor declaration process for a BI minor, please use this link to access our departmental form.

Students in this minor will gain a solid foundation in the biological sciences. The following is required to complete the minor:

  • One of the following:
    • BIOL 110L: Principles of Biology I with Lab
    • BIOL 112L: Perspectives in Biology I with Lab
  • One of the following:
    • BIOL 111L: Principles of Biology II with Lab
    • BIOL 113L: Perspectives in Biology II with Lab
  • Fifteen credits at or above the 190 level
    • This is typically met by four upper level courses (4 credits each) or three upper level courses (4 credits each) and three credits from independent labs (1 credit each).
    • Genetics (BIOL 190 or BIOL 198) is strongly recommended.

Minor in Computational Biology (CB)

Students in this minor will study biological systems using math and computer science. This minor requires the following courses:

  • One of the following:
    • BIOL 110L: Principles of Biology I with Lab
    • BIOL 112L: Perspectives in Biology I with Lab
  • One of the following:
    • BIOL 190: The Human Genome and BIOL 198P: Genetics Lab
    • BIOL 198: Principles of Genetics and BIOL 198P: Genetics Lab
  • One of the following:
    • CSC 161: The Art of Programming
    • CSC 171: The Science of Programming
  • STAT 190 (formerly CSC 262): Introduction to Statistical Methodology OR STAT 180 (formerly STAT 212): Introduction to Applied Statistical Methodology + STAT 216: Applied Statistics Methods
  • Two of the following:
    • BIOL 219L: Genomics of Quantitative Traits
    • BIOL 253L: Computational Biology
    • BIOL 257L: Applied Genomics
    • BIOL 259L: Applied Population Biology
