The University's main academic calendar, which lists the dates for the start and end of classes as well as break periods, can be found here.

Registering a PhD Dissertation
When registering a PhD dissertation during the academic year, 15 full working days are needed between the day a dissertation is registered in the Arts, Sciences and Engineering Graduate Studies Office (Lattimore 218) and the day of the defense. The day the dissertation is registered is not counted, nor is the day of the defense. If you have any questions, call the Arts, Sciences and Engineering Graduate Studies Office at (585) 275-4153. PhD dissertations should be prepared according to the document Preparing Your Thesis: A Manual for Graduate Students. Registering a Master's Thesis
When registering a Master's thesis, 10 full working days are needed between the day a thesis is registered in the Arts, Sciences and Engineering Graduate Studies Office (Lattimore 218) and the day of the defense. The day the thesis is registered is not counted, nor is the day of the defense. If you have any questions, call the Arts, Sciences and Engineering Graduate Studies Office at (585) 275-4153. Summer 2013

Fri. April 5 On-line registration begins for fall 2013.
Fri. June 28 Last day to submit Ph.D. dissertation and paperwork to the Graduate Studies Office for the summer. NOTE: if this deadline is not met, then the defense may not be held until the fall.
Thurs. July 4 University closed for holiday. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines.
Mon. July 22 Last day to submit Master's Programs of Study for October 2013 degree candidates.
Fri. Aug. 16 Last day to hold PhD defense in summer 2013.

Last day for terminal Plan A & B examinations – oral, written or essay.
Wed. Aug. 21 Orientation for International Students 9:00 – 12:00 noon Location TBA
Thurs. Aug. 22 MA/MS students receiving terminal degrees in October must be degree complete by this date. Plan A Master’s students must submit 2 unbound final corrected thesis copies in the Graduate Studies Office.

Last day to submit to the University Dean, Dean Kearney the final corrected abstract and pdf of your dissertation to the ProQuest web site. Send required confirmation email to Dean Kearney’s office to fulfill degree requirements for a October 2013 degree. NOTE: If this deadline is not met, student must register and pay the appropriate fee for the fall semester at X time status.
Aug. 23 - Sept. 6 No Ph.D. defenses may be held during this time period.
Mon. Aug. 26 ESL Testing for all international students who will TA in fall 2013 or spring 2014.
Thurs. Aug. 29 Orientation for new graduate students: 1:00 pm, Hoyt Auditorium.
Fri. Aug. 30 TA Training Session for all new graduate students who will TA during their graduate program: 9:00 am, Interfaith Chapel, Lower Level.

Fall 2013

Tues. Sept. 3 Fall semester begins.
Mon. Sept. 9 First day to hold Ph.D. defense in the fall semester. (Thesis and paperwork having been submitted to the Graduate Studies Office by Aug. 8, 2013.)
Mon. Sept. 16 Deadline for fall Registration. ($160 late fee after this date)

Fellowship Writing Workshop: 10:00 a.m. (Location: TBA)
Fri. Sept. 20 Last day for Plan A or B final examinations - oral, written, essay for non-terminal October degree conferral. (Aug. 22, 2013 deadline for students not registering for fall.)
Wed. Oct. 2 Non-terminal Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected copies in the Graduate Studies Office for October degree conferral.

All documents (exam reports, grade changes, etc.) must be submitted to the Graduate Studies Office by this date (Program of Study deadline was July 22, 2013) to remain on October conferral list.
Oct. 10 - 11 Board of Trustees Meeting – degrees conferred
Tues. Oct. 15 Drop/Add/Audit Deadline for fall 2013. Withdrawal is permitted only if time status is not affected.

Last day to petition GSO for waiver of audit fees

Last day to submit Master's Programs of Study for March 2014 degree candidates.
TBA Spring 2014 on-line registration opens.
Mon. Nov. 11 Last day to register Ph.D. dissertation and paperwork to the Graduate Studies Office for the fall semester. NOTE: If this deadline is not met, the defense may not be held until the spring semester.
Nov. 28 - Nov. 29 Thanksgiving Holiday. University is closed. These two days cannot be counted as working days in meeting deadlines.
Dec. 23 - Jan. 3 Due to recess and holidays, no PhD defenses may be held during this time period.
Wed. Dec. 25 The University is closed. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines.
Wed. Jan. 1, 2014 The University is closed. This day cannot be counted as a working day in meeting deadlines.
Jan. 6 - 10 PhD defenses may be held during this time period only if the dissertation was accepted in the Graduate Studies Office by the Nov. 11 deadline.
Tues. Jan. 14 MA/MS students receiving terminal degrees in March must be degree complete by this date. Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected thesis copies in Graduate Studies Office.

Last day to submit (in Dean Kearney’s office) the final corrected abstract and pdf of your dissertation to the ProQuest web site and send required confirmation email to the University Dean of Graduate Studies Office to fulfill degree requirements for a March 2014 Ph.D. NOTE: If this deadline is not met, student must register and pay the appropriate fee for the spring semester at X time status.

Mon. Feb. 10 Non-terminal Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected thesis copies in Dean’s Office to remain on the March 2014 conferral list.

All documents (exam reports, grade changes, etc.) must be submitted by this date (Program of Study deadline was October 15, 2013) to remain on March conferral list.
Wed. Feb. 26 Drop/Add/Audit Deadline for spring 2014. Withdrawal permitted only if time status is not affected.

Mar. 13 - 14 Board of Trustees Meeting - degrees conferred.
Mon. Mar. 21 Last day to submit Ph.D. dissertation and paperwork to the Graduate Studies Office for the May degree period. Dissertations registered after this date will be for degrees granted in October.

Apr. 21 - May 2 Due to end of academic year processing, GSO will be closed to dissertation registrations during this period.
Wed. Apr. 23 Master's Plan A students must submit 2 final corrected thesis copies in Dean’s Office.

All documents (exam reports, grade changes, etc.) must be submitted by this date (Program of Study deadline was Jan. 29, 2014).

Last day to submit to the University Dean, Dean Kearney the final corrected abstract and pdf of your dissertation to the ProQuest web site. Send required confirmation email to the University Dean of Graduate Studies Office to fulfill degree requirements for a May 2014 degree.
