About me...
My name is Andrés Arocho González, and I am a senior from San Juan, Puerto Rico. I am majoring in Political Science, with a minor in Latin American Studies.
My interest for research ignited during the summer of 2023, despite my limited experience in this realm. I embarked on an independent research project, devoting three enriching months to intensive archival research at the CUNY Hunter College - Center for Puerto Rican Studies Library and Archive in Harlem, New York City. In addition to this, I delved into past investigations conducted by esteemed researchers and engaged in face-to-face interviews, spanning both the United States and Puerto Rico, to support my findings.
My research mission was clear: to find the intricate connections that exist between Puerto Rico's independence movement, its diaspora, and the movement's broader engagement with the international community from 1950 to 2003. I sought to demonstrate how these connections embody a compelling narrative of political and social resilience—a testament to the enduring aspiration of Puerto Rico's independence from the United States.
This year, I am thrilled to serve as a mentor for aspiring researchers, particularly those venturing into the realms of Social Science research.
How has your experience as a researcher influenced your career objectives?
The opportunity to engage in research has been instrumental in shaping my career objectives. It has not only provided me with a profound sense of direction in both my academic pursuits and future professional path, but has also been an essential element for refining and amplifying my skillset.
