New statue, spaces debut during Meliora Weekend

George Eastman
A celebration marked the dedication of a new statue of George Eastman in Eastman Quadrangle honoring the legacy of Eastman, who established the Eastman School of Music as a University unit and also was a leading benefactor behind the Eastman Dental Center, School of Medicine and Dentistry and Medical Center, and the campaign to establish the River Campus. From left, trustees and George Eastman Circle charter members Larry Bloch ’75, his wife, Cindy; Gwen Meltzer Greene’65; and Tom Sloan ’65, ’67(MS) introduce the new statue as Jim Thompson, chief advancement officer, looks on. The Blochs provided the support for the statue, which was sculpted by noted artist and former Rochester student Marc Mellon.

Nearly 6,000 people were on hand October 8–11 to celebrate the ninth annual Meliora Weekend, which featured the presentation of a new statue honoring the legacy of George Eastman, the much-anticipated debut of Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, the formal dedication of the Edmund A. Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and many distinguished speakers.
