Jessica Cantlon, assistant professor of brain and cognitive sciences, and Daniel Weix, assistant professor of chemistry, have been selected as 2013 Sloan Research Fellows. Awarded annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the fellowships honor the “best of the best among young scientists.” Each fellowship carries a $50,000, two-year award to help support the recipient’s research.
Andrea DeMeo, executive director and chief operating officer of the Center for Community Health and director of the University’s annual United Way campaign, has been elected to the United Way of New York State Board of Directors. The board partners with local United Way chapters to help create service plans that benefit individual communities across the state.
Alice Taylor is the recipient of Highland Hospital’s Distinguished Physician Award for 2012. Taylor joined Highland as a pediatrician in the Highland Family Maternity Center in 2005. For the past three years, she also has served as medical director of the Special Care Nursery.
Jeffrey Lyness, senior associate dean for academic affairs at the Medical Center, has been invited to join the Apple Distinguished Educator Class of 2013. Members of the class collaborate on solutions to global education challenges, advise Apple on technology integration in learning environments, and share their expertise with educators and policymakers.
Douglas Humpherys, department chair and professor of piano at the Eastman School, has been named artistic director of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation.

Mezzo-soprano Melissa Fajardo won first place in the Friends of Eastman Opera’s 12th annual competition for Eastman School voice and opera students.
