Dr. Donald Foster (1926-2013)

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Donald M. Foster ’50M (MD) began his career as a diagnostic radiologist in Bakersfield, California in 1958.  Once he began practicing medicine, Dr. Foster aspired to demonstrate his deep appreciation for and pride in the “exceptional medical education” he received at Rochester. This began with the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s George Hoyt Whipple Society.

Dr. Foster became a Charter Member of the Whipple Society upon its inception in 1971. By faithfully maintaining his membership throughout his lifetime, he enabled the School’s leaders to direct his unrestricted support to areas where it was most needed and where there was the greatest opportunity for a return on investment.

To ensure his support at the School would be everlasting, Dr. Foster established a generous provision for the University of Rochester in his estate plan. In grateful recognition for his unceasingly loyal support, the University established two endowed funds in his name: the Donald M. Foster M.D. Distinguished Professorship in Biostatistics and the Donald M. Foster M.D. Professorship in Biomedical Genetics.

The two endowed professorships will bolster the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s faculty resources today, and in perpetuity, while preserving Dr. Foster’s legacy of support and forever linking him to the faculty members who taught him how to deliver “Medicine of the Highest Order.”
