Experience China Through a Joint Internship

Hong Kong America Center invites University of Rochester students to apply for one of 20 slots in the South China Internship Program.

The Hong Kong America Center, a non-profit organization based at the Chinese University of Hong Kong invites University of Rochester students to apply for the South China Internship Program (SC), a national competition for 20 American undergraduates to participate in a low-cost, high-quality 'tandem internship.' The 20 Americans will team up with 20 Chinese university students to spend eight weeks together in summer 2013 as interns in companies and NGOs in the booming Pearl River Delta of south China. The intern teams will work together on joint projects for their cultural hosts.

Overview

  • Program dates: June 10 – August 8, 2013
    (includes an orientation in Hong Kong and a reflection program in Zhuhai, China)
  • Only full-time undergraduate U.S. citizens are eligible to apply
  • Some knowledge of Chinese is preferred but adaptability, cultural awareness, and interest in China are the skills most desired.
  • Interns are placed in south China in Guangzhou and Zhuhai, with the possibility of Shenzhen, Xiamen, Shanghai and other cities.
  • The program arranges housing but students are responsible for accommodation costs (UR has Chinese alumni and student networks to help facilitate homestays).
  • Costs include a $600 program fee, airfare, accommodation, meals and visas. Some companies may provide a small stipend. See the project expense estimator for an approximation of costs.
  • Academic credit may be available.
  • Application Deadlines:
    • January 14, 2013 (round one – finalists notified before February)
    • February 14, 2013 (round two)
