WHO: Students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend a lecture Justice Under Siege? Increasing Threats to Judicial Independence with The Honorable Lewis A. Kaplan '66, United States District Judge, Southern District of New York.
TIME, DATE, PLACE: 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 14, Hawkins-Carlson Room in Rush Rhees Library. The lecture will be immediately followed by a reception in The Meliora, Salon D.
ABOUT JUDGE KAPLAN: Since his appointment in 1994, Judge Kaplan has handled a number of well known cases, most notably presiding over the only criminal prosecution in a federal district court of a Guantanamo detainee. Judge Kaplan also tried the largest criminal tax case in U.S. history, and presided over a number of federal racketeering cases involving some of the nation's most notorious crime families. Other noteworthy decisions include his 1998 ruling enjoining the City of New York from interfering with the so-called Million Youth March in Harlem on the ground that the regulations relied upon by the City in banning the march violated the First Amendment as well as a 1997 decision upholding the Welfare Reform Act of 1996 against constitutional challenge.
Throughout his career, Judge Kaplan has delivered speeches and lectures at some of the country's leading academic institutions and has been published in journals including the New York Law Journal and the Columbia Business Law Review. In 2009, he was awarded both the Learned Hand Medal for excellence in federal jurisprudence from the Federal Bar Council and the Judicial Recognition Award from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He graduated with an A.B. with high honors in political science from the University of Rochester in 1966 and earned his juris doctor from Harvard Law School in 1969.
