Wayne Barlow '34E, '37E (PhD), professor emeritus of composition at the Eastman School, on December 17 in Rochester. After receiving the first doctorate ever granted in composition in the United States, he joined the Eastman faculty and taught there for 40 years. John Brophy, the first dean and director of the School of Business Administration, on November 6 in Rochester. Brophy's legacy includes starting part-time and full-time master's-degree programs in business administration at the school (which was renamed the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration in 1986).
Angelo Notides, professor of environmental medicine and of biophysics, on November 10. He was internationally recognized for his studies of the estrogen receptor, the protein responsible for mediating the effects of estrogens on sexual development and function. In his honor, the Department of Environmental Medicine has established the Angelo C. Notides Memorial Fund. Contributions may be sent to the Department of Environmental Medicine, Attn. Millard Taylor '35E, former Eastman professor and concertmaster of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) for more than 20 years, on December 5 in Naples, Fla. He joined the Eastman faculty in 1944 and became chairman of the string department in 1950, a position he held until his retirement in 1979.
Otto Thaler '49M (MD), '55M (Res), professor of psychiatry, on October 27 in Rochester. "He remained a constant advocate of discovering each person's uniqueness and worth, and used these qualities as assets in order to build strength in patients, students, residents, nurses, social workers, and fellow faculty," said Eric Caine, chair of the Department of Psychiatry. In reporting the death of Robert Guiffrida '49, '50 (Mas) in the last issue, we neglected to note his years on the Rochester faculty. Giuffrida served as an instructor and then an assistant professor of German from 1957 until 1962. ALUMNI
