FACULTY

Lewis White Beck, Burbank Professor Emeritus of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy, on June 7 in Rochester. A world-renowned scholar of German philosopher Immanuel Kant, Beck joined the University in 1949 and served as chair of the philosophy department from 1949 to 1966. An associate dean of the graduate school from 1952 to '56 and dean from 1956 to '57, he was named the Burbank Professor in 1962. "With his wisdom, wit, and charm, Lewis deeply affected everyone who had any association with our department," said Richard Feldman, outgoing department chair. Under Beck's guidance, the doctoral program in philosophy gained international recognition.

Hugh Flynn, an expert on ultrasonic waves' violent effects on air bubbles in liquids--a topic with applications in energy, medicine, and manufacturing--on May 23 in Rochester. He joined the faculty in 1960 and became professor emeritus of electrical engineering in 1978. During his tenure, he was acting chair of the electrical engineering department from 1969 to 1971 and associate dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science from 1968 to 1972. He also played a key role in the founding of the computer science department.

Mary Rasmusson Krusenstjerna '58E (MM), a flute instructor in the Community Education Division at Eastman since 1986, on February 2 in Rochester. The founder of Community Education Division's flute choir, she taught flute privately for most of her professional career. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Community Education Division Scholarship Fund, Eastman School of Music, 26 Gibbs Street, Rochester, NY 14604.

Seth McCoy, professor of voice at Eastman and a tenor known nationally for his thoughtful performances in oratorios and orchestral concerts, on January 22 in Rochester. McCoy first performed with the Jubilee Singers (successor to the famous Fisk Jubilee Singers) and later became a soloist with the Robert Shaw Chorale. He appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra, among many others, and made his opera debut at the age of 50 as Tamino in Mozart's Magic Flute during a live broadcast from the Met. He joined Eastman in 1982.

Irving Spar '52 (PhD), professor emeritus of biophysics and former senior associate dean for graduate studies at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, in November in Rochester. As senior associate dean, he was responsible for programs leading to advanced degrees in basic biomedical sciences. He joined the medical faculty in 1953 and, except for a year at the University of Kentucky, served there for his entire career. His principal research interests were in immunology and in the use of radioactive isotopes in medical research and treatment.

Catherine Tait, an acclaimed violinist who showcased 20th-century composers, on March 3 in Rochester. A member of the Eastman faculty since 1986, she received the Eisenhart Award for Excellence in Teaching and served as string department chair from 1988 to 1991. Her performances were recorded on the Vox and Arabesque labels and her most recent CD was recorded with professor of piano Barry Snyder on the Gasparo label. A memorial concert and reception will be held at Eastman on September 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. Gifts may be sent to the Scholarship Fund, Eastman School of Music, 26 Gibbs Street, Rochester, NY 14604.
