FLEMINGS, COITS, AND WARNERS

In the year 2001, Peter Fleming, a member of this fall's entering class, will represent the fifth generation of his family to graduate from the University of Rochester.

Peter's mother, Margaret (Peggy) Whalen Fleming '64, explains it this way: "Peter's great-great-grandfather, Charles Pierpont Coit, graduated from Rochester in 1867. He also received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1868. He was pastor of a Presbyterian church here in Rochester." (University records also list an Albert Coit 1866, most likely related to Charles Pierpont Coit--they were only one class apart, born in the same town, and prepared at the same school.)

Peter Fleming's great-grandfather was Frederick Warner Coit, who graduated in 1901, exactly 100 years before Peter. "Coit started the basketball team," Peggy Fleming writes, "and he attended every home football game. He was a lawyer until his death at 89 years old."

F. W. Coit married Lottie Ellsworth Coit, first woman violinist in the Rochester Philharmonic and a teacher at the Eastman School of Music in the preparatory school. He was the cousin of Fritz Warner, father of Margaret Warner Scandling '44, namesake of the education school, and a cousin also of Frederica Warner '09, who has a chair at the Warner School named after her. F. W. Coit, along with these other connections, was also a brother to Charles Welles Coit 1899.

Peter Fleming's great uncle was Charles F. Coit '40, a physics student and soccer player. Peggy Fleming's mother, Helen Coit Whalen, studied voice at the Eastman School of Music.

About Peter's parents: Peggy Fleming, a local school librarian, worked at the University Libraries for ten years. Her husband, Brian Fleming '63, is associate director of residential life at Rochester.
