Due to an error in processing information she provided to the University, we incorrectly reported her death and not the death of her mother, Grace Montana Besenfelder '27, who died in July 1997. Emmanuel Goldberg '32, '35 (MS), founder and retired president of the Nalge Company, died January 8. He was 87.
First elected to the University's Board of Trustees in 1969, Goldberg was active in several Rochester- area community service organizations and international philanthropies. He also served on the board of directors of the Eastman Dental Center.
He received a bachelor's and a master's degree, both in chemistry, from the University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
Goldberg founded Nalge, a plastics manufacturing company, in 1951. The company was acquired by the Sybron Corporation in 1966.
Goldberg served on Sybron's board of directors for many years.
Harry W. Fischer, M.D., former chair of the Department of Radiology, died on November 1, 1998. He was 77.
In the course of his teaching career at the universities of Iowa, Michigan, and Rochester, he was a pioneer in the research of diagnostic techniques. At the time of his retirement in 1991, he was known as one of the world's foremost experts on the use of contrast material.

Martin Lessen, professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, died January 24, in Rochester. He was 78.
Lessen joined the University faculty in 1960 as the chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Sciences and is credited with playing an important role in forming the department following the establishment of the College of Engineering. He served as chair from 1960 to 1970.
