WARNER PROFESSORS ENGAGED IN SCHOOL COLLABORATIONS

Professors and a doctoral student at the Warner School are developing two new programs --one in mathematics, the other in language arts--that use collaborations between higher education and K-12 educators to improve classroom practice and teacher preparation. The programs are supported by New York State grants.

In the mathematics project, Judith Fonzi, a Warner School doctoral student, and Raffaella Borasi, holder of the Frederica Warner Professorship and widely published leader in mathematics education, are working with four local school districts to promote reform in the way they teach math.

Approaching it through an inquiry method, Borasi and Fonzi use a student's curiosity and problem-solving abilities to gain fuller understanding of the subject. In recent years, they have demonstrated these techniques to teachers at summer institutes and in follow-up sessions throughout the year.

The language-arts program aims to create "a foundation of literacy" for pre-kindergarten through grade 2 children in a Rochester city school.

Joanne Larson, assistant professor of literacy and elementary education, focuses her research on literacy as a social practice and examines the ways in which classroom practices mediate access to participation in literacy events.
