SUSAN B. AWARD WINNERS

Brownlee

Paula Brownlee '60 (Flw), a member of the University's Board of Trustees, received the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award during the annual Susan B. Anthony Legacy Dinner this winter. Brownlee, who holds a doctorate in chemistry from Oxford University, was the first woman president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

The dinner--held by the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women's Leadership to honor the famed activist's two-year campaign to win women admission to the University--also celebrated the 100th anniversary of coeducation at Rochester this year.

During the evening, Arabela Arafovic '01 received the Susan B. Anthony Scholarship, Meredith Tobin '00 was awarded the Susan B. Anthony Prize, and Emily Bones '01 received the Fanny R. Bigelow Scholarship. Those awards are presented by the University Women's Club.

Winners of the Jane R. Plitt Scholarship also were recognized:

Veronica Anya Lakner '01 received the award this year; previous recipients were Heather Hall '00 and graduate student Melissa Diaz.

Brownlee served as president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities from 1990 until 1998, when she retired.

Before being named the chief executive of the organization, she had served as president of Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, for nine years. Prior to that, she had been dean of the faculty and professor of chemistry at Union College in Schenectady, New York.
