Eastman Medal Inaugurated at Commencement 2000

The University awarded its first George Eastman Medal as the graduating Sesquicentennial Class of 2000 celebrated the University's 150th Commencement.

The award recognizes individuals who, through outstanding achievement and dedicated service, embody the high ideals for which the University stands.

The inaugural Eastman Medal was presented to Mark L. Schneider, director of the Peace Corps and this year's keynote speaker.

The medal honors Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak Company, and one of the University's great benefactors.

In all, 2,442 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees were awarded during Commencement exercises last spring.

In addition to Schneider, bachelor's and master's degree students heard from William F. May '37, chairman and chief executive officer of the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation.

May, a former chairman and CEO of the American Can Company, received the Charles Force Hutchison and Marjorie Smith Hutchison Medal, the University's highest alumni award.

At the School of Medicine and Dentistry graduation ceremonies held May 21, Samuel O. Thier, president and chief executive officer of Partners HealthCare System, Inc., gave the keynote address and received an honorary Doctor of Science degree.

Commencement for the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration took place June 11. Keynote speaker John C. Bogle, founder of the Vanguard Group, Inc., received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
