Compositions by Augusta Read Thomas, associate professor of composition at the Eastman School, were featured (along with those of other composers) on the album Colors of Love by Joseph Jennings and Chanticleer. The recording won a 1999 Grammy for "Best Small Ensemble Performance."


The Eastman Jazz Ensemble, directed by Fred Sturm, was one of three co-winners in the "jazz big band" category in Down Beat magazine's annual college student awards.

The awards were announced in the June issue of the magazine.


Rochester's programs in economics, political science, medicine, business, engineering, and music are among the nation's best, according to the most recent graduate and professional school rankings by U.S. News & World Report.

WeBWorK, an online program that lets students check their mathematics homework, was recognized by the 1999 International Conference on Technology in Collegiate Mathematics. The group also honored professors Michael Gage and Arnold Pizer, the Rochester faculty who developed the system.

WeBWorK is an automated Web-based homework checker that immediately tells students in calculus and physics courses how they are doing on assignments.


Eby Friedman, professor of electrical and computer engineering, was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach a graduate course and to do research in integrated circuits at the Technion in Israel.

Mervyn Willis, artistic director of the International Theatre Program, received a Fulbright to teach and do research at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow.


Joanna Scott, novelist and Roswell Smith Burrows Professor of English, received a 1999 Lannan Literary Award.

She is one of 10 winners of the award, presented by the Lannan Foundation of New Mexico for work of exceptional quality in poetry, fiction, or nonfiction.
