FALL WRAP-UP

Celebrating his 25th year coaching the women's soccer team, Terry Gurnett '77 led the team to the UAA championship and a spot in the NCAA Division III championships. Along the way, the team earned the coach his 300th career victory.

Rochester had a perfect 7-0 record in association play and finished the year 13-5, winning 10 straight games after a rocky start. Playing in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs, Rochester lost to Nazareth College 2-1.

Several athletes won individual honors, including Jen Seferiadis '02, who was named the UAA Player of the Year and was named Second Team All-American. Sarah Tarka '05 was named UAA Rookie of the Year, the second straight year that Rochester had the association's top rookie. Gurnett and assistant coaches Sike Dardganis and Lisa Allen '97 were honored as UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.

Men's Soccer: Rochester got off to an 8-0-1 start behind new head coach Chris Apple '92 to finish the regular season at 11-4-2 and make the ECAC Northwest championships, winning the title with games over Skidmore College and SUNY Plattsburgh. Jacques Appleby '03 was named the Outstanding Player of the ECAC championships, and Apple and assistant coaches Ryan Austin and Carolyn Schmidt were honored as UAA Coaching Staff of the Year.

Football: The Yellowjackets' new no-huddle offense was a big hit as the team wracked up a single-game record for total offense with 595 yards and a 44-6 victory over St. John Fisher College on opening night. An interception for a school-record 94 yards for a touchdown by Michael Newcomb '02 highlighted Rochester's 25-20 win over the University of Chicago at Homecoming. The team finished the season with a 3-7 record in the UAA, and 1-3 in the UCAA. Linebacker Brian Kowalski '02 and defensive back Kassim Howell '04 were both named First Team All-UAA and First Team All-UCAA.

Field Hockey: Kaitlin Poeth '04 became the single-season scoring leader with 10 goals and 12 assists for 32 points, earning second team All-American regional honors and being named Second Team All-New York State as Rochester finished the season with an 8-11 record, 3-4 in the UCAA.

Women's Tennis: Rochester won the UCAA championship and the New York State team title. Joanna Toke '03 won the singles and doubles (paired with Rachel Sandler '02) titles at the state tournament and the ITA Northwest Regional singles and doubles championships. Toke and Sandler advanced to the national championships in Texas.

Men's Tennis: Collin Ryan '04 and Dan Williford '04 won the ITA Northeast Regional doubles championship and advanced to the national championships in Texas.

Women's Cross Country: Erika Wasserstein '04 qualified for the NCAA Division III national championships by finishing 14th individually at the NCAA regional qualifier in New York City.

Men's Cross Country: Rochester finished fifth at the New York State championships and 12th as a team at the NCAA regional qualifier in New York City. Dave Messenheimer '03 finished 16th individually at the state championships.

Golf: The golf team was runner-up at the ECAC championships in Middlebury, Vermont, and at the UCAA championships.

Women's Volleyball: Rochester was 1-2 in pool play during the second round of the UAA championships, losing to host Chicago in the second round of the consolation bracket.
