Spring Wrap-Up

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field: Katherine O’Brien ’05 broke the school record in the 800-meter run in three consecutive races to earn All-America honors.

At the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field championships at St. Lawrence University, she finished seventh of nine, with a time of 2:12.90—more than two seconds better than her NCAA qualifying time.

At the ECAC championships, O’Brien ran a personal best of 2:14.77. That surpassed the NCAA’s provisional qualifying standard and broke a 16-year-old Rochester record set by Josefa (Dippy) Benzoni ’88 in 1987, who was clocked at 2:15.1. The Yellowjackets placed 23rd out of 70 schools (48 teams scored at least one point) at the championships.

O’Brien was selected for the NCAA championships based on that 2:14.77. In the trials, she broke her own record with a time of 2:13.41. That placed her among the nine finalists.

The women’s team finished fourth in the New York State championships and set three school records in the process: pole vault by Erin Bank ’03; 4-by-800-meter relay by the team of Liz Conway ’03, Elizabeth Canfield ’04, Kate Pohlman ’05, and Kate O’Brien ’05; and shot put by Grace Kraay ’05.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field: Rochester finished third in the New York State championships and seventh in the ECAC championships out of 70 teams.

The 4-by-400 relay team (Matt Tierney ’06, Brian Strandberg ’03, Greg Dusek ’04, Chris Clark ’05) won the New York State crown. The 4-by-100-meter relay team (Kirk Bristol ’06, Tierney, Strandberg, Dusek) won the ECAC championship.

Baseball: The Yellowjackets finished 19–21 and qualified for the Upstate College Athletic Association championships.

At season’s end, Chris Rosenbaum ’06, R. J. Johnsen ’03, and Matt Davison ’03 were named to the All-UCAA team. Rosenbaum (who hit .380) and Johnsen (who led the team with a .401 average and six home runs) were named Third Team All-New York Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Steve Foley ’06 was named the UAA Rookie of the Year.

Softball: Seven players earned All-Conference honors from the UCAA and the UAA. Tracy Simon ’04 and Bridget Baran ’05 were named Second Team All-UCAA. Jen Moshier ’06 and Sara Dial ’04 received honorable mention. Baran, Kristina Long ’06, Kristen Maloney ’05, and Val Palermo ’03 were all named Second Team All-UAA. Rochester finished 5–27.

Women’s Lacrosse: The Yellowjackets finished 6–7, 3–4 in the UCAA. Rachel Hawley ’05 was named Second Team All-UCAA.

Men’s Tennis: Rochester was selected for the NCAA Division III championships on both a team and individual basis. The Yellowjackets lost 5–1 to Williams College in the team competition.

Colin Ryan ’04 and Dan Williford ’04, who were selected for the NCAA individual championships as a doubles team, were defeated in the first round of the competition.

Rochester finished third in the UAA Championships. The Yellowjackets were 10–9 for the season.

Women’s Tennis: The Yellowjackets finished 6–12. Rochester was third at the UCAA championships in the fall, sixth at the UAA championships in the spring, and fourth at the New York State championships.

Golf: Rochester finished second in the UAA championships and fourth in the Mid-Atlantic regionals in the spring. The Yellowjackets were sixth in the Fred B. Kravetz Invitational, a field that included eventual Division III national champion Averett College. In the fall, Rochester was third in the ECAC qualifier (eighth in the overall championships) and third in the UCAA championships.
