Evarts Named Med Center CEO; New Counsel Tapped

C. McCollister (Mac) Evarts ’57M (MD), ’64M (Res), has been appointed senior vice president and vice provost for health affairs, posts he had held on an interim basis beginning last July.

Evarts, who also assumes the duties of Medical Center CEO, was the overwhelming choice of an 18-member search committee.

“I have enjoyed working with Dr. Evarts on a multitude of Medical Center and University initiatives, and believe that he is the right person, at the right time,” President Jackson said. “He brings humanity, vision, and accountability to one of the most important, and difficult, jobs in any academic institution, and I am confident that he, together with the senior leadership team at the Medical Center, will continue the enormous progress of the Medical Center in all of its dimensions.”

A 1957 graduate of the School of Medicine and Dentistry and former chair of the Medical Center’s Department of Orthopaedics, Evarts is retired CEO of the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Pennsylvania State University. He had returned to the Medical Center earlier this year after retiring from Penn State.

Evarts succeeds Jay Stein, who resigned last May.

In other administrative news, Jackson announced the appointment of Sue S. Stewart—retired partner of the Rochester law firm of Nixon Peabody and a well-known specialist in legal affairs for educational institutions and other nonprofit organizations—as vice president and general counsel for the University.

Stewart retired in 2001 after a 33-year stint with Nixon Peabody, the last three as managing partner of the Rochester office. Her practice concentrated on legal issues relating to educational institutions, including medical schools and their related hospitals, museums, and other nonprofits. For many years, she was the primary outside counsel for the University as well as for several other educational institutions.

She is a graduate of Wellesley College and Georgetown Law School.
