Winter Wrap-Up

Women’s Swimming and Diving: Karen Gromer ’07 earned honorable mention All-American honors in the 200-yard butterfly for her 13th place finish at the NCAA championships. At the UAA championships, Gromer won the 200-yard butterfly and provisionally qualified for nationals. She broke Rochester records in the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard intermediate medley. She also swam on the record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay team with Kari Joyce ’07, Erin Szjata ’05, and Michele Gruen ’07. Head coach Eric Stefanski, assistant coaches Stacy Wells and Jennifer Lorentz, and diving coach Jason Tranquill were named the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year. The Yellowjackets finished second at the UCAA championships and posted a dual meet record of 9–1.

Men’s Swimming and Diving: Rochester finished 5–4 in the dual meet season and were seventh at UAAs and third at UCAAs. Craig Matt ’07 broke the Rochester record for the 200-yard butterfly and provisionally qualified for NCAAs. Zach Freed ’07 set a new Rochester record for the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field: Katie O’Brien ’05 finished ninth in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III championships, won the same event at the ECAC championships, and finished second at the New York State championships. Four Yellowjackets scored in the top eight at ECACs besides O’Brien: Anne Baker ’05 was sixth in the weight throw, Anni Barbi ’05 was third in the pentathlon, Erika Wasserstein ’04 was sixth in the 3,000, and Michele Gabriele was eighth in the 500. Rochester was 14th at ECACs. At the New York State meet, the team finished sixth with Liz Canfield ’04 third in the 1,500, Cynthia Gurecki ’06 third in the weight throw, Barbi second in the pentathlon and seventh in the high jump, Grace Kraay ’05 fifth in the shot, and Melinda Huang ’07 fourth in the high jump.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field: The Yellowjackets were fifth at the New York State championships and 11th at the ECACs. Graduate student Brian Strandberg won the state title in the 500, Andrew Wunder ’04 was second in the weight throw, and Chris Clark was third in the 800.

Squash: Allen Fitzsimmons ’04 and Dave Easwaren ’04 competed in the College Squash Association individual championships. The Yellowjackets finished sixth in their division at the team championships. Rochester finished second at the inaugural UCAA championships with a 3–1 record. Overall, the Yellowjackets were 10–14. Fitzsimmons and Easwaren were named first team All-UCAA. Pete Avitable ’04 was named honorable mention All-UCAA.
