CONFERENCES:
LIBERTY LEAGUE DEBUTS

Rochester athletes will be playing under a new conference name this fall after the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association changed its name to the Liberty League. The league also added three new members for football.

In addition to Rochester, which was a founding member when the league was formed in 1995, the conference includes other founding institutions Clarkson, Hamilton, Hobart and William Smith, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, St. Lawrence, Skidmore, and Union College. Vassar College became a full member in 2000– 01 and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute join this fall as associate members for football only.

Three Yellowjackets have been selected Academic All-Americans by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA):

Tennis player Avinash Reddy ’05, an economics major who reached the quarterfinals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s regional singles championships last fall, was named to the at-large Second Team.

French major Elizabeth Canfield ’04, a middle distance runner who helped set a record in the 4-by-800-meter relay for the second straight year this spring, was named to the women’s track and cross-country Third Team.

Brian Strandberg ’03, a graduate student in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences who won the New York State individual title in the 500-meter dash and ran on the record-setting 4-by-100-meter and 4-by-400-meter relay teams, was named to the men’s track and field Third Team. Strandberg also was named to the Third Team last year as a senior.
