Fall Wrap-Up

Men’s Soccer: Fueled by record-setting scoring by striker Nate Micklos ’06, the men’s soccer team won the ECAC Upstate New York championship for the fifth straight season.

Micklos scored a single-season record 20 goals and had seven assists for 47 points, breaking the record of 18 goals scored by George Schmergel ’66 in 1964 and tied by Reed Martin ’75 in 1973. Micklos upped his career total to 42 goals, breaking Martin’s career record of 41, set from 1971 to 1974. Micklos was named a Second Team NSCAA/Adidas All-American and a First Team NSCAA/Adidas Scholar All-American. Micklos also was chosen as the UAA Player of the Year.

Freshman goalkeeper Jack Burgasser ’08 was named the UAA Rookie of the Year. Seven players earned All-UAA honors, and four were named All-Region.

The team, 14–2–4 for the season, rose to No. 3 in the Division III national poll. The Yellowjackets’ defense set a season record of 13 shutouts and allowed only 13 goals for the season. Rochester allowed only two of those goals in the final six games of the season, both in one game against the University of Chicago, which Rochester won, 3–2.

Women’s Soccer: The Yellowjackets reached the semifinals of the ECAC Upstate New York championships in an 11–6–3 season. A strong defense held 16 of 20 opposing teams to one goal or none. Four players were named All-UAA, including Karen Forsythe ’04, who was named All-UAA, All–New York State, and NSCAA All-Region.

Volleyball: The women ended their season 25–13 and reached the ECAC Upstate New York championships. Setter Liz Loveless ’05 finished her career with 5,075 assists, joining only 17 other players in Division III whose career assists surpassed 5,000. Loveless and Susan Johnson ’07 were named All-UAA and All–New York State.

Football: In the expanded Liberty League (formerly the UCAA), Rochester finished fourth out of eight teams (3–4) and was 4–6 overall. Defensive back Michael Dermody ’06 and wide receiver/return specialist Nate Gibbons ’06 were named First Team All-ECAC. Five players were named All–Liberty League. Quarterback Aaron Molisani ’06 threw for 1,814 yards and 16 touchdowns, which ties the single- season mark for touchdown passes. Gibbons tied an NCAA Division III record by returning two kickoffs for touchdowns in one game against Union College.

Field Hockey: The Yellowjackets ended the season 10–9. Erin Charnow ’05 was named First Team All-Region, All-State, and All– Liberty League, and she was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game. Goaltender Rachel Cahan ’08 was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year. Charnow and Heidi Davies were named All-Region. Four players earned Liberty League honors.

Men’s Cross-Country: Rochester finished 5th out of 15 at the state championships and 7th out of 31 at the NCAA Atlantic regional championships. Dan Duett ’05 earned All-Region and All-State honors. He finished in the top 10 in the state run and was the 20th individual finisher in the NCAA regional meet.

Women’s Cross-Country: With six out of seven runners combining for a seven-minute improvement in time, the Yellowjackets came in 9th out of 31 at the NCAA regional meet and finished 7th out of 16 at the state championships. Kellie Hasselwander ’08 was the top Yellowjacket finisher in each race. She received All-Region honors for her performance in the NCAA regional run. The Yellowjackets were fifth out of eight at the UAA championships, which they hosted.

Men’s Tennis: Three players qualified for the Wilson/ITA Small College championships. Partha Bhattachrya ’06 finished sixth in the singles competition. Thanos Kantarelis ’08 and Eric Hansen ’08 were eighth in the doubles competition. They reached the national championships by winning the regional competition.

Women’s Tennis: Rochester finished sixth at the Liberty League championships, which Rochester hosted. Tessa Baker ’06 and Alexa Perry ’08 won the Flight A doubles championship at the Can Am Invitational hosted by Niagara University in October.

Golf: With strong play from Stephen Goodridge ’08, the golf team won the prestigious 23-team Williams Invitational in September. Goodridge tied for first place but was defeated in a playoff to determine the medalist. Rochester finished second overall at the ECAC Division III championships.
