Golfer Wins Top Award

Stephen Goodridge ’08 won the Phil Mickelson Award last spring from the Golf Coaches Association of America as the top freshman golfer in Division III.

The honor is one of several that the optics major from Attica, New York, received as he led the Yellowjackets to their eighth UAA team title and their 19th trip to the NCAA Division III championships.

Goodridge also was named an All-American by the coaches association and was UAA Rookie of the Year. Robert Sherman ’07, Joe Derrigo ’07, and Patrick Shanahan ’07 earned All-UAA honors as well.

Other highlights from the spring season:

Baseball: Rochester finished with a 21–16–1 record (4–8 in the Liberty League) and claimed second place in the UAA championships. Pitcher Mark Jakubowski ’05 was named First Team All–Liberty League as a relief pitcher while first baseman and UAA Rookie of the Year Dan Price ’08 was named the Liberty League’s Co-Rookie of the Year.

Softball: The Yellowjackets set a record for victories in a single season as they finished 27–18 overall (4–3 in the Liberty League). Shortstop Jena Robertson ’07 was named First Team All–Liberty League while second baseman Sam Carr ’07, third baseman Alicia Citro ’08, and outfielder Jessica Sorrentino ’08 were named to the Second Team.

Men’s Tennis: With a dual meet record of 19–4, the team was selected for the NCAA Division III tournament for the seventh time in school history. Three team members earned All-American honors for their performance at the ITA Northeast regional championships: Partha Bhattacharya ’05 won the singles championship, and Thanos Kantarelis ’08 and Eric Hansen ’08 won the doubles championship.

Women’s Tennis: Colleen Cross ’08, who reached the round of 16 at the ITA championships, earned All–Liberty League honors in singles. The team finished with a 7–16 record.

Men’s Track and Field: The Yellowjackets finished fourth at the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championships at Fauver Stadium in May. Weightman Andrew Wunder ’05 won the individual state title, Matt Tierney ’06 took top honors in the 400-meter run, and Chris Clark ’05 was first in the 800.

Women’s Track and Field: The team finished sixth at the state championships at Fauver, where Kate O’Brien ’05 defended her 800-meter title and Anne Baker ’05 won the hammer throw. Baker was named an All-American for her third place finish at the NCAA outdoor track and field championships. Laura Richenderfer ’07 finished eighth nationally in the women’s 10,000–meter race walk at the 2005 Pan American junior championships.

Women’s Lacrosse: The Yellowjackets finished 6–10 overall (3–5 in the Liberty League). Midfielder Rachel Hawley ’05 was named First Team All–Liberty League and defender Amy Hein ’05 was named to the Second Team. Rochester also was recognized for both team and individual academic achievement by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
