2005 Scouting Report
MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY The team finished seventh at the NCAA regionals and fifth at the New York State championships. Dan Duett ’05 was named All Region, and the Yellowjackets won the team academic award from the Division III Cross Country Coaches Association. A strong nucleus returns under coach John Izzo. Rochester hosts the NCAA regionals on November 10.
WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY The Yellowjackets took ninth at the NCAA regionals, seventh at the New York State championships, and fifth at UAAs. Like the men, the women also won the team national academic award. Coach Barbara Hartwig has a veteran team, led by Kellie Hasselwander ’08, who was named All- Region last year. Rochester hosts the NCAA regionals on November 10.
FIELD HOCKEY With a record of 10–9 overall and 3–4 in the Liberty League, the Yellowjackets won the national academic team award and 10 players were named to the national scholar-athlete team. Erin Charnow ’05 was named All-Region. Ten starters return for coach Michelle Andre, including goalie Rachel Cahan ’08 who was the Liberty League Rookie of the Year last year. Also expected back are Heidi Davies ’07, named All-Region last year, and six of 2004’s top seven scorers.
FOOTBALL The Yellowjackets tied for fourth place in the Liberty League (3–4) and finished at 4–6 overall. Nate Gibbons ’05, who tied an NCAA Division III record by returning two kickoffs for touchdowns in one game, was named All-ECAC, joining Michael Dermody ’05 for that honor. Coach Mark Kreydt fields a team with sixteen returning starters and hopes to build on an offense that last year averaged nearly 30 points a game, but that loses tackle Justin Galloway ’05, who was named First Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine.
MEN’S SOCCER The team won its fifth straight ECAC Upstate New York championship and finished 14–2–4 overall and 5–0–2 in the UAA. Seven Yellowjackets were named All–UAA and four were named All-Region. The team also won the national team academic award. Led by Second Team All-American and UAA Player of the Year Nate Micklos ’06, a forward who broke single-season and career goal scoring records as a junior, the team includes seven returning starters for coach Chris Apple ’92.
WOMEN’S SOCCER The Yellowjackets reached the semifinals of the ECAC Upstate New York championship and ended the 2004 season with an overall record of 11–6–3 (3–4 in the UAA). For the fourth straight year, the team earned a national All-Academic citation. Four players were named All–UAA; two were All–New York State; one All-Region. Coach Terry Gurnett ’77, whose 329 career victories are the most wins of any women’s soccer coach in Division III, has seven starters returning in a program that has advanced to postseason play for 18 straight seasons and been ranked in the NCAA Division III’s top 25 for 23 straight years.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL The team finished as ECAC Upstate New York runner-up and fifth in the New York State championship for second straight year, ending the season with a 25–13 record. Setter Liz Loveless ’05, named a Second Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine, finished her Rochester career with more than 5,000 assists. Only 17 Division III players had reached that figure entering the 2004 season. Coach Linda Downey, who begins the season with 175 career victories, has three of the top four leaders in kills returning for a team whose strong play at the net has made them exciting to watch. Expected back is outside hitter Susan Johnson ’07, who was named All-New York State and All-UAA.
