“I was born and raised in Trinidad—we moved when I was 10—where the school system was a lot more strict. There was more discipline, more respect—addressing adults as ‘Miss’ or ‘Mister.’ Going to school is no joke there. You don’t hear about people quitting school. You hear school, school, school—nothing else. And that had an effect on how I behaved when I moved to the United States. When I was in junior high and high school, people said I was more mature.”
