Faculty

Robert Boynton, who founded the Center for Visual Science at the University, died on September 4. He was 81.

A renowned visual scientist, Boynton came to Rochester in 1952 as an assistant professor of psychology. In 1963, he founded and became the director of the Center for Visual Science, which brings together scientists from a variety of disciplines to collaborate on vision-related research.

In 1974, Boynton took a position at the University of California at San Diego, where he remained until his retirement in 1991.

Best known for his book Human Color Vision, he received many awards throughout his career. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1981.

Lyle Brown, one of Rochester’s most successful coaches and a member of the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame, died on September 28. He was 83.

In 19 seasons as Rochester’s men’s basketball coach, Brown won 222 games and took the Yellowjackets to the NCAA basketball playoffs four times. He also coached the men’s soccer team for 20 years, winning 50 games. His Rochester soccer teams were some of the most successful in school history.

Brown, who coached six All-American players in soccer and four in basketball, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Hong Li, the Loretta C. Ford Professor of Nursing and associate professor of nurisng, died on October 15. She was 47.

In her eight years at the School of Nursing, Li was a respected teacher and nationally recognized researcher in the field of family care for frail older adults. She received a number of research awards and honors, including the James G. Zimmer New Investigator Award from the American Public Health Association and the Distinguished Nurse Researcher Award from the Foundation of the New York State Nurses Association.

The Center for Research and Evidence-Based Practice in the School of Nursing will support the completion and disseminaiton of her unfinished work.

Alfred Mann, professor emeritus of musicology at the Eastman School, died on September 21. He was 89.

Mann, an Eastman professor for seven years and longtime director of publications of the American Choral Foundation, was also a noted choral conductor. His translation of J. J. Fux’s book on contrapuntal theory was published twice, in 1943 and 1965. Mann also was the author of Theory and Practice: The Great Composers as Teachers and Students and Bach and Handel: Choral Performance Practice.

In 1987 he was made an honorary member of the International Bach Society—only the third American to be so honored.

Brenda Meehan ’70 (PhD), professor emerita of history and of religion, died on August 27. She was 64.

After completing her doctorate at Rochester, Meehan joined the faculty as an assistant professor of history and spent her entire academic career at the University. She founded the Russian Studies program and served as its director for 20 years. She also served as senior associate dean in the then College of Arts and Science, was instrumental in the creation of the women’s studies program, and later was a founding member of what is now the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women’s Studies. In 2005, she received the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achievement Award from the Anthony Center.
