Antiquities Golden Gallery
after words photoANCIENT LAURELS: A 2,300-year-old Greek gold wreath is one of several ancient works of art that will show off their splendor in a newly renovated exhibition space at the Memorial Art Gallery, thanks to a $1 million gift from longtime gallery supporter Helen Berkeley. The gift, one of the largest in the gallery’s history, will allow the University’s museum to add new interactive technologies and complete other renovations to the antiquities gallery, an exhibition space visited often by schoolchildren and their teachers. When completed, the Helen H. Berkeley Gallery of Ancient Art will showcase the wreath (a 1999 gift of the late Robert Berg, the founding chair of the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at the Medical Center) as well as a rare pair of fourth-century Egyptian coffins and other objects from Egypt, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Near East.
