River Campus Undergraduate 1960s

1960

Thomas Grubb writes, “I have finally decided, the year just before the 50th anniversary of my graduation in 1960, to send an update.” This year marks his 25th year on the vocal arts faculty at the Juilliard School, where he conducts classes in French vocal repertoire performance and diction. Since 1986, he has served as a French coach for all French operas at the New York City Opera, the latest being Massenet’s La Navarraise in June. His book, Singing in French, a Manual of French Diction and Vocal Repertoire (Macmillan/Schirmer Books) is celebrating its 30th year in print. After more than two decades of giving master classes throughout the United States and abroad, the French Ministry of Culture awarded him the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in May 2002. Tom has maintained a private studio north of Lincoln Center for the past 35 years, where he has coached hundreds of singers, including Renée Fleming ’83E (MM), his former student at Juilliard. He adds: “The U of R was the ONLY school where I could do a double major in French and piano and, just before my graduation, Rochester awarded me a scholarship to teach American civilization at the University of Rennes. This afforded me the unique and golden opportunity to perfect my French and to study piano in Paris with the Brazilian-French pianist, Magda Tagliaferro, for two years after earning my master’s degree in French literature at Yale. In retrospect, I realize that I truly owe my career to these coincidental opportunities at the U of R of which I took full advantage.”
