1970

Ari Requicha (PhD) sends an update. He’s the Gordon Marshall Chair in Engineering and a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at the University of Southern California. In 2006, he received the Senior Research Award of USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering and was listed in the Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge academic citation index as a highly cited researcher for the years 1981 to 1999. In 2007, he was elected a fellow of the Association for Computer Machinery and won the first-ever Pierre Bezier Award of the Association for Solid Modeling. In 2008, he was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and won the Pioneer in Robotics and Automation Award of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. In 2010, he won the Distinguished Service Award of the IEEE Nanotechnology Council and was named a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Nanotechnology Council for the years 2010 and 2011.

Kishore Marathe (PhD) has published Topics in Physical Mathematics (Springer, 2010). . . . Dale Springer S (MBA) has been named to the board of directors of Sigma Corp., a manufacturer serving the North American waterworks industry.

1977

Robert Miola (PhD), the Gerard Manley Hopkins Professor of English and lecturer in the classics at Loyola University of Maryland, writes: “I was a student of Cyrus Hoy, whom you featured lately [In Memoriam, July-August 2010]. Norton commissioned me to do the edition of Hamlet that succeeded his, and the new edition has just come out, keeping Hamlet in the UR family, as it were. I close with good memories of the University and of my mentor.”

Mike Ryan S (MBA) (see ’81 undergraduate). . . . Cesar Silva (PhD), the Hagey Family Professor of Mathematics and chair of the department at Williams College, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to support the Oxtoby Centennial Conference, to be held at Bryn Mawr College in 2011, in honor of the centennial of the birth of noted Bryn Mawr mathematician John Oxtoby.

1985

Patrick McDermott, who teaches in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Wayne State University’s medical school, has coedited The Physics and Technology of Radiation Therapy (Medical Physics Publishing, 2010). “This textbook is an introduction to the physics and technology of radiation therapy. It’s the outgrowth of a course taught to medical residents in radiation oncology,” he writes.

1987

Robert Loce (MS) was one of eight winners of the Anne Mulcahy Inventor Award last November. The award, granted by Xerox, recognizes scientists and engineers whose patents have led to growth for the company. Robert, principal scientist at the Xerox Research Center in Webster, N.Y., was honored for his role in developing Xerox’s iGen products.

John Davidson S (MBA) has been named to the board of directors of DaVita, a provider of kidney dialysis treatments and support services based in Denver. John is senior vice president, controller, and chief accounting officer of Tyco International, a provider of security and fire protection devices.

1989

Parama Roy (PhD) has published a book, Alimentary Tracts: Appetites, Aversions, and the Postcolonial (Duke, 2010). She’s a professor of English at the University of California at Davis.

1992

Peter Duprey S (MBA) has been named president and CEO of Broadwind Energy, an Illinois company that provides wind turbine gearing systems and services to wind energy providers.

1997

Bridget Klenk Larrabee (MA), W (MS) (see ’95 undergraduate). . . . Sean Rugless S (MBA) has been elected board chair of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority.

2000

Jacqueline Hawks Lyttle S (MBA) was recognized by the Rochester Business Journal as one of 2010’s “40 Under 40” business and community leaders. Jacqueline is the director of product and contract development at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

2002
