Faculty and Student Honors 2010–2011

National Medal of Science

Esther Conwell, a professor of chemistry who has a joint appointment in the Department of Physics, received a National Medal of Science from President Barack Obama last fall. Recognized as a pioneering materials scientist, Conwell helped launch the computer revolution with work that explored how electrons travel through semiconductors. She also was recognized for carving a path for women scientists in the second half of the 20th century.

Established by Congress in 1959, the national medal is awarded by the president to recognize “outstanding contributions to knowledge” in the sciences. Conwell is the first Rochester faculty member to receive the medal.

She is also a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering, two of the highest honors a scientist or engineer can receive.

American Association for the Advancement of Science

Robert Clark, dean of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest scientific society and the publisher of the journal Science.

Recognized for his “distinguished contributions to research on dynamic systems and controls, acoustics, and, more recently, on nanoscience and nanoengineered materials,” Clark is an expert in the sciences of acoustics and in bionanomanufacturing. He is a fellow of both the Acoustical Society of America and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Wolf Prize

Ching Tang, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of Chemical Engineering, was awarded the Wolf Prize, one of the international science community’s most highly regarded honors. The inventor of the organic light-emitting diode—which gave birth to a multibillion-dollar industry that’s exploring ways to create and improve displays in cell phones, computers, and televisions—Tang is also widely recognized for his work in photovoltaics, which could lead to major improvements in the ability to produce low-cost solar cells to capture energy from the sun.

One of three scientists who received this year’s prize, Tang was cited for his “deep creative contributions to the chemical sciences in the field of synthesis, properties, and an understanding of organic materials” and “for groundbreaking conceptual and experimental advances that have helped to create the research field of organic materials.”

The Wolf Prize is presented annually by the Israel-based Wolf Foundation.

Tang is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the Society for Information Display.

National Academy of Sciences

Lynne Maquat, the J. Lowell Orbison Chair and Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics, was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences. One of the highest honors possible for a scientist, the induction recognizes Maquat for her work in the field of RNA biology. Widely cited for her research on a cellular mechanism that derails the production of unwanted proteins in the body, Maquat is the director of the University’s Center for RNA Biology.

She is also an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Established in 1863 by a congressional act of incorporation, the National Academy of Sciences is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the promotion of science and its use for the general welfare.

American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Michael Tanenhaus, the Beverly Petterson Bishop and Charles W. Bishop Professor of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics, was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Founded in 1780, the honorary society has a broad membership that includes scientists, politicians, businesspeople, and artists.

Highly regarded for his groundbreaking findings in how the human brain recognizes and processes words, Tanenhaus and his students pioneered a method of study known as the Visual World Paradigm, which has been widely used in language processing studies since 1995.

He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Cognitive Science Society, and the Association for Psychological Science.

National Women’s Hall of Fame

Loretta Ford, the founding dean of the School of Nursing, will be one of 11 American women inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony this fall in Seneca Falls, N.Y., the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement. An internationally regarded nursing leader, Ford is credited with helping transform the nursing profession and changing the delivery of health care by cofounding the nurse practitioner model at the University of Colorado in 1965. Today there are more than 140,000 nurse practitioners in the United States. Ford was appointed the first dean of the School of Nursing in 1972. She retired in 1985.

Founded in 1969, the National Women’s Hall of Fame is the nation’s oldest membership organization recognizing the achievements of great American women. Inductees are selected every two years based on their lasting contributions to society through the arts, athletics, business, education, government, humanities, philanthropy, and science.

UK Fulbright Scholars

Nathaniel Lindsey ’11 (T5) was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to study in the United Kingdom, the most competitive of the Fulbright student programs. He and Hannah Watkins ’11 are Rochester’s first graduating students selected for the program. Lindsey, an interdepartmental engineering major from Skaneateles, N.Y., will study at the University of Edinburgh, enrolled in a one-year master’s program. They are among only 35 scholars chosen from more than 700 applicants for the UK program.

The two join several other Rochester students selected for Fulbright programs this year. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright programs offer opportunities for career-launching study, teaching, and research abroad and are designed to promote educational and cultural exchange between the United States and other nations.
