Selecting the cover for this issue was a challenge. How can you pick between two such adorable subjects as Oliver and Clara Bender? The 11-month-old fraternal twin children of Robin and Jason Bender were all we could ask for in illustrating a story about how marvelously aware infants and toddlers are. Robin, who’s a project coordinator in the psychology department, helped put them at ease for our photo shoot, but the two were naturals. Oliver ended up on the cover by a slim consensus, but we’ve posted alternative cover shots.—Scott Hauser
