KUDOS Alumni Honors

The University celebrated the achievements and service of notable graduates during ceremonies this fall.

School of Arts & Sciences

Distinguished Alumnus Award

John Levi ’69, a partner in the Chicago office of the law firm Sidley Austin, received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Arts & Sciences at a ceremony in November.

A nationally recognized specialist in employment law, Levi is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Since 2010, he has served as chairman of the board of the Legal Services Corporation, a nonprofit corporation that provides civil legal assistance to those who otherwise would be unable to afford it. President Barack Obama nominated him to serve on the board in 2009.

Levi has served on Rochester’s Chicago-Midwest Regional Cabinet since 2009 and is a charter member of the George Eastman Circle, the University’s leadership annual giving society.

Eastman School of Music

Luminary Award

Martin (Marty) Messinger ’49, managing director of Neuberger Berman, an independent management investment firm, and longtime supporter of the University, received the Luminary Award during a ceremony this fall to mark the appointment of Jamal Rossi ’87E (DMA) as the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School of Music.

A life trustee of the University, Messinger has been an important advisor and supporter for several University initiatives. Since being named a member of the Board of Trustees in 1989, he has served on the Trustees Visiting Committee for the Eastman School, the Eastman Board of Managers, and the Eastman National Council.

He and his late wife, Joan, helped provide a new home for the Eastman Community Music School and established an endowed fund at Eastman to provide support for programming and other areas. The Periodical Reading Room and the Graduate Study Rooms in Rush Rhees Library are named in recognition of their support. The Messingers also established endowed funds supporting the Judaic Studies Program, the Debate Union, and the Messinger Library Recognition Award.

Messinger is a member of the George Eastman Circle.

School of Medicine and Dentistry

Hutchison Medal

C. McCollister (Mac) Evarts ’57M (MD), ’64M (Res), a nationally recognized orthopaedist, received the Charles Force Hutchison and Marjorie Smith Hutchison Medal, an award given in recognition of achievement and service by an alumnus. An elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Evarts

was appointed chief executive officer, senior vice president, and dean of the College of Medicine at Pennsylvania State University in 1987. From 2003 to 2006, he served as senior vice president and vice provost for health affairs and CEO of Rochester’s Medical Center. A member of the George Eastman Circle, he has

served on the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s Alumni Council and the school’s National Council. He also established an endowed professorship in orthopaedics. Evarts Lounge, the main gathering space in the School of Nursing’s home in Helen Wood Hall, is named in recognition of Evarts and his late wife, Nancy Lyons Evarts ’54N.
