Anthem, Inc. and Premera Blue Cross Network Data Breach
Anthem and Premera Blue Cross are two Excellus BlueCross BlueShield 'sister' Blues companies, as part of the nationwide BlueCard network that recently announced a cyber-attack on their computer systems that potentially impacted some local Excellus BCBS members. Excellus BCBS advises that Anthem and Premera are separate entities from Excellus BCBS and that the cyber-attacks did not affect claims processed within the local Excellus BCBS 31-county network. Rather, the data breaches announced affected claims processed directly by either Anthem or Premera, outside the local 31-county Excellus BCBS network, as part of the national BlueCard network. Anthem and Premera advised Excellus BCBS they provided notification to all local Excellus BCBS members with claims in either company's service area back to 2004 (Anthem) and 2001 (Premera).
Anthem and Premera are offering two years of identity theft protection and credit monitoring to members who may have been impacted by the cyber-attack. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the customer care phone number on the back of your Excellus BCBS medical ID card.
