Another Taslima Nasreen Update

The new issue of Outlook India has a comprehensive article (and awesome action pic) by Saba Naqvi Bhaumik on this situation, explaining the political underpinnings of this situation.

The origins of the Taslima-bashing episode lie not just in the writer’s image. It is also linked to the politics of Hyderabad. This is one fast-developing cyber city where Muslims count because of their sheer numbers.

And as echoed in the comments in our first post about Taslima Nasreen, apparently she’s not a very good writer.

And, contrary to the hyper perception created by TV channels that revelled in the visual drama of the August 9 attack on Taslima, the episode was not on top of the mind for the Muslim community. It would be a fair assessment to say that no Muslim, liberal or conservative, thinks highly of Taslima. Liberals dismiss her as an average writer who has joined the brigade of Muslims who have discovered the great marketability of lampooning Islam.

Thankfully though, Saba Naqvi Bhaumik doesn’t think the price placed on her head is all that serious:

Taslima Nasreen need not spend sleepless nights fearing for her life. Even the political goons of Hyderabad who have demanded her head on a platter are not serious in their intent.
