Seligman Joins Science Coalition’s Roundtable

President Joel Seligman joined presidents and chancellors from other research universities at the Science Coalition’s seventh annual media roundtable in New York City last March. During the two-hour session, the academic leaders discussed with journalists policy issues related to higher education, including federal funding for science research—a topic that Seligman has made a priority in his tenure.

The group also discussed the United States’ dependence on oil; the role of universities in studying sustainable growth; the competition the country faces in training the next generation of innovators; and retaining students in math, science, and engineering. Seligman said the shortage of students in the sciences “reflects the lack of resources that the United States is putting into scientific research. It’s a self-inflicted wound.”
