How do 9-year-olds begin illustrious careers as scientists and engineers? Starting with toys, of course.

The University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences helped inspire some of those students by hosting the region’s first annual Lego competition in 2005.

Sponsored by the international organization For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), the tournament pitted 26 teams of students age 9 to 14 against one another in challenges that required not only a talent for Lego-building, but also math, science, and technology skills. Participating on a FIRST team also qualified students for the opportunity to apply for one of five $40,000 University scholarships when they’re ready to turn their play into a profession.
