University Creates Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute
In October 2006, the School of Medicine
and Dentistry became one of the
first 12 institutions nationwide to receive
a Clinical and Translational Science
Award from the National Institutes of
Health (NIH). The $40 million grant-
the largest NIH award in the University
history-has led to the creation of an
institute at the Medical Center that
will be dedicated to accelerating the
conversion (or translation) of scientific
discoveries into new ways to understand,
prevent, treat, and cure diseases.
Next year, the University will begin construction
of a 150,000-square-foot Clinical
and Translational Sciences Building on the
Medical Center campus. It will house the
institute, bringing key personnel, resources,
and programs together under one roof.
