The Conversations with Composers virtual series provides a behind-the-scenes commentary on selected Eastman Centennial Commissions.

John Clayton and Bill Dobbins

This conversation features composers John Clayton and Bill Dobbins, along with trumpeter Byron Stripling ’83E and saxophonist Lael Dratfield ’23E, and is facilitated by Jamal Rossi, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean at the Eastman School of Music.

John’s work, Keys are Black, Blacks are Key, and Billy’s work, Legacy, were premiered by the Eastman Jazz Ensemble on May 2nd, 2022 at the Eastman School of Music.

Commissioned by Rick and Sue Williams, and the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music in Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Eastman School of Music.

Maria Schneider ’85E (MM)

This conversation features composer Maria Schneider ‘85E (MM), director of the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble Dave Rivello ’89E (MM), and Eastman New Jazz Ensemble members Haik Demirchian ’24E and Lee Wolf ’23E (MM), and is facilitated by Jamal Rossi, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean at the Eastman School of Music.

Maria’s work, The Great Potoo, was premiered by the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble on April 27, 2022 at the Eastman School of Music.

Billy Childs and Joseph Schwantner

This conversation features composers Billy Childs and Joseph Schwantner, along with professor of percussion Michael Burritt ’84E, ’86E (MM), and is facilitated by Jamal Rossi, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean at the Eastman School of Music.

Billy’s work, The Inexorable Motion of Time, and Joseph’s work, Fast Forward, were premiered by the Eastman Percussion Ensemble on March 24, 2022 at the Eastman School of Music.

Commissioned by Dr. Shreedevi Pandya in memory of her late husband, Dr. Kishan Pandya and in honor of the Nexus Percussion Ensemble, and the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music in Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Eastman School of Music.

Hannah Lash ’04E

This conversation features composer Hannah Lash ’04E, professor of conducting and ensembles Dr. William Weinert, and Eastman Chorale members Karen Goldfeder ’23E (MM) and James Wolter ’22E (DMA). Facilitated by Jamal Rossi, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean at the Eastman School of Music.

Hannah’s work, Canticum Psalmi Falsum (Sing-Psalms are False), was premiered by the Eastman Chorale on February 27, 2022 at the Eastman School of Music.

Commissioned by the Howard Hanson Institute for American Music in celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Eastman School of Music, and by the Yale Choral Artists (Jeffery Douma, artistic director) and the Davidson Foundation.
