Eastman School of Music Centennial Logo

Join us as we celebrate Eastman’s rich history and promising future with Centennial Celebration events beginning in August 2021 and continuing through 2022. Events include world-premieres of more than forty new compositions, fanfares composed by Eastman alumni, acclaimed guest artists performing alongside Eastman’s faculty and ensembles, national academic and music conferences, alumni events throughout the country, a documentary being produced in partnership with WXXI, and more! Additional information and an updated schedule of events will be forthcoming. Check back frequently for a full listing of in-person and virtual events.

Eastman Studio Orchestra
The Eastman Studio Orchestra, directed by Bill Dobbins, will present their annual March concert. Professor Dobbins will be retiring at the end of June, so this will be his last concert as director. The program will consist of arrangements by masters and doctoral students from Eastman’s Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media department of music by Chick Corea, Clare Fischer, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Richard Rodgers, and Guy Wood, representing influential and often recorded repertoire from the American songbook and the jazz repertoire. The program will also include the world premiere of a new composition by DMA/JCM trombonist Andrew Watkins. In addition to the live repertoire, selections by the Eastman Studio Orchestra from the late 1970s, with Rayburn Wright conducting, will be screened.

The center piece on the program is Koolish Zein, a three-movement work for solo marimba and vibraphone with percussion quartet and electronics by New Zealand composer John Psathas, written for Michael Burritt and commissioned by a consortium of universities including Eastman. Professor Burritt will be joined by Assistant Professor of Music Theory Matt Curlee ‘01E (MM) for the premiere of Curlee’s new work, Something Hiding in the Light, a piano and marimba duo with percussion quartet. In addition, the program offers premieres of All Green Lights, a percussion duo by Kyle Peters ‘17E (MM) and Michael Burritt’s newest solo work, Blue Smoke.

World Premiere of Three Rhapsodies by Carter Pann.
Commissioned by the American Composers Forum with funding from The Thelma E. Hunter Fund, to commemorate the Eastman Centennial celebration.
Program will revolve around American composers who pioneered bringing other genre references into a classical style medium: short works by Chopin and Rachmaninoff, Bolcom (ragtime), and Carter Pann, who was a student of Bolcom. Schumann’s Kreisleriana will feature in the first half of the concert.
