Empower Communities through Education

Humans for Education was founded by Daphne Pariser ’20 (PhD), inspired by a trip to Kenya when she was ten years old. She returned to Kenya at 21 where she discussed with locals how they would solve poverty; their idea was to build small businesses for schools and clinics so that they could operate without donations and help from the government. Using that framework, Daphne created Humans for Education to ensure that the nonprofit was creating solutions alongside the community and that the solutions were sustainable longterm.

Today, Humans for Education partners with schools in developing nations to create sustainable, culturally-sensitive businesses so they can generate their own income to provide for students’ needs and help build strong communities. They aim to increase access to education, not only by providing income streams, but also by addressing health and sanitation concerns that can interfere with regular access to schools.

Pariser and her team have competed in a handful of the Ain Center’s business competitions. Competing against 27 strong teams, they finished as a semi-finalist in the 2018 Mark Ain Business Plan Competition. She also competed in the 2018 Finger Lakes Regional Contest of the New York Business Plan competition. Her team won the top prize in the Social Entrepreneurship & Non-Profit category. She went on to beat out teams throughout New York to take home first place in the statewide New York Business Plan Competition; she was awarded $10,000 for her winning venture.

Humans for Education has been in UR’s Student Incubator since September 2016. Since their founding in 2015, they have earned over $45,000 in funding from competition wins, donations, a Farash Foundation grant, in addition to individual contributions. Their enterprise was incorporated in 2016 and is a federally-recognized non-profit through 501(c)(3) designation. Moving forward, they will pursue funding and partnerships, both of which will allow them to increase their reach and provide more support, educational and otherwise, for developing communities.
