Student Spotlight: Adriana Tobar

As RCCL’s programs expand to all corners of the campus and throughout the neighborhoods of Rochester, our office team is expanding, too! In addition to two new full-time staff positions, we’re excited to welcome two brand new student employees to the 107 Lattimore suite. Learn more about one of these great additions, Adriana Tobar.

Tell us about your previous involvement with RCCL: I was involved with Urban Fellows program in the Summer of 2016. As an Urban Fellow I had the opportunity to meet different organizations in the community and their role here in Rochester. I learnt about the complex demographic of Rochester and all the efforts that are being done to improve the lives of those who live here. I also had a chance to work with Compeer Rochester; a non-profit that helps people in the community who are living with a mental illness. I strongly recommend this program, it has the perfect combination of engagement with the community as well as with the academics that back up many of the efforts being done in the city.

What does community engagement mean to you? Community engagement means reaching out to everyone and everything in your surroundings in order to create a relationship in which every party involved learns and grows from each other.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen who want to get involved? I would tell them to not miss any opportunity that they have to engage with the Rochester community. I would tell them that once they get out there, they will find how many organizations and great people are out there. They will get a chance to not only learn about Rochester, but also about themselves and what they are truly passionate about.

What’s your favorite Fall activity in Rochester? I love walks during fall, it reminds me of home. The weather is perfect and the trees are beautiful.
