As a student-athlete, I understand that finding time for research alongside classes, practices, games, and other commitments can seem difficult. I’ve learned that it is definitely possible with good communication and time management. Being upfront with your research mentors about your athletic schedule and finding consistent times during the week to dedicate to the lab can make a big difference. I’d be happy to help other student-athletes figure out how to get involved in research without feeling like they have to choose between athletics and academics.
What advice do you have for prospective or new researchers?
I wish I had known earlier just how easy it is to get started in research. Many students don’t realize that you can get involved as early as you want, and taking that first step is really up to you. As a Research Ambassador, I want students to know how accessible research is at the University of Rochester and help make the process of getting involved feel less intimidating. I hope to offer advice on where to look for labs, how to reach out to researchers, and how to find opportunities that match your interests. Most importantly, I want to help students not only get involved in research, but find research they genuinely enjoy and are excited to be a part of.
