Indigenous, Native, Aboriginal

The words should be capitalized when referring to the original inhabitants of a geographic region. The personal preferences of the individuals who are being described should be respected in referring to them, their ethnic identity, and culture. In referring to Native people of what is now the United States, for example, the tribal affiliations of Native Americans may be preferred. (Note: only use ethnic or racial distinctions when the references are germane to the purpose of the story.)
