TODAY'S UPDATES

Five new positive cases of COVID-19

Since Monday’s notice in @Rochester, there are five new cases of COVID-19 to report: two River Campus students and three Medical Center Campus students. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated daily. Whenever a new case is known, the contact-tracing process begins immediately with confirmed exposures being contacted and required to quarantine.

If you think you’re experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, it’s important to report them through Dr. Chat Bot immediately. Even if you think your symptoms might be something else—like a cold, seasonal congestion, or allergies—it’s still important to tell University health professionals and contact tracers what you’re experiencing.

Update on COVID-19 vaccination availability for University in-person instructors, faculty

New York State health officials have announced that in-person college instructors/faculty are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. University instructors/faculty teaching in-person this spring who wish to schedule an appointment should complete this New York State screening form as the first step. New vaccination sites are opening this week throughout the state. Instructors/faculty who wish to be vaccinated must sign an attestation at the point of receiving the vaccine stating that they meet the criteria of teaching in-person classes in the coming semester or term.

Although in-person instructors/faculty are now eligible to make a reservation for vaccination, demand for vaccines outpaces the state’s current supply. Therefore, the roll-out of the vaccine for educators may be delayed and appointments may not be immediate.

'Gibbs Street to the Grammys' discussion

This Thursday, January 14, at noon EST, join five of this year’s Grammy Award nominees—Gregg August ’87E, Sarah Brailey ’04E, Brian Giebler ’10E, Malcolm Merriweather ’10E (MM), and Maria Schneider ’85E (MM)—for an inspired discussion about music, performance, and the essential role of art and music in their lives and in all our lives. Students, faculty, and staff can register for the virtual lecture here. The event is part of the Experience Rochester series, created to bring the very best of Rochester directly to you. It is presented by the University’s Alumni Board.

Emil Homerin, a scholar of Arabic literature and Islam, remembered

Emil Homerin, a professor and former chair of the Department of Religion and Classics, died on December 26. A leading scholar of Sufi poetry and mysticism, he is remembered by colleagues and students for his enthusiasm and generosity. University flags will be lowered Tuesday, January 19, for Homerin, who joined the Rochester faculty in 1988.
