TODAY'S UPDATES

One new positive case of COVID-19

Since Wednesday’s notice in @Rochester, there is one new case of COVID-19 to report: a River Campus student. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated daily. Whenever a new case is known, the contact-tracing process begins immediately with confirmed exposures being contacted and required to quarantine.

It’s extremely important for the health of the University community that individuals continue to adhere to the face masking and social distancing protocols. Even as some individuals are now receiving their first or second dose of the vaccine, these practices to prevent the transmission of the virus cannot be relaxed.

If you think you’re experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, it’s important to report them through Dr. Chat Bot—for non–Medical Center faculty, staff, and all students and for Medical Center employees—immediately. Even if you think your symptoms might be something else—like a cold, seasonal congestion, or allergies—it’s still important to tell University health professionals and contact tracers what you’re experiencing.

Feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed in these COVID times? Students can reach out to the University Counseling Center for help. UHS also maintains a site with COVID Coping and Resources for students. Employees can contact the UR Medicine Employee Assistance Program, one of several support services for faculty and staff.

The University community can help make an impact on the education of every child, the stability of every family, and the economic mobility of every person, by pledging support.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

COVID-19 cannot be the grand finale for American research

The Hill, March 30

An op-ed penned by John Latini, president of the Science Coalition, notes that COVID-19 “vaccine development is the crowning achievement of scientific advancements made over the last year and speaks to the endurance of America’s research institutions when backed by federal funding.” Latini also offers that vaccines are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the ways America’s research institutions have contributed to the national pandemic response, citing the University’s development of an optical chip on a disposable card that can detect exposure to multiple viruses within a minute—including the coronavirus that causes COVID-19—from a single drop of blood. The University is a member of the Science Coalition.
